The Philadelphia Orchestra and Chief Conductor/Artistic Adviser Charles Dutoit have announced plans for the orchestra’s 2009-10 season. Highlights include the world premiere of George Walker’s Violin Concerto and the Philadelphia premiere of Richard Danielpour’s work for soprano and orchestra, A Woman’s Life, co-commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra; a centennial focus on music of the Philadelphia-trained composer Samuel Barber; Philadelphia Orchestra debuts by conductor Jaap van Zweden and soprano Karita Mattila; major works of Berlioz and Stravinsky as part of Dutoit’s continuing exploration of the great French composer and of the Ballets Russes; and two weeks of subscription concerts under Christoph Eschenbach, who will complete his Mahler cycle with that composer’s Symphony No. 7 and celebrate the 200th anniversary of Schumann’s birth with an all-Schumann program in March 2010.
