American conductor RICHARD FLETCHER has been appointed principal conductor of Germany’s Bremerhaven State Opera, effective in September 2009. He has been a frequent guest conductor at New York City Ballet, has guest conducted numerous North American and European orchestras, and has served on the conducting staffs of the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Houston Symphony, and New York City Opera. He has also performed extensively on the double bass, including several seasons with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. A native of Massachusetts, Fletcher began his musical training in piano, double bass, composition, and music theory, receiving a bachelor’s degree from New England Conservatory. He subsequently pursued conducting studies with Sixten Ehrling at The Juilliard School, where he earned both master’s and doctoral degrees.
