In a March 4 press release announcing details of its 2009-10 season, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra reports that Neeme Järvi, its music director since the start of the 2005-06 season, has been named conductor laureate and artistic advisor. In addition to remaining at the helm of the NJSO past what has been billed as his 2008-09 “farewell season,” Järvi holds emeritus or laureate positions with three other organizations: the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Sweden’s Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He is also chief conductor of The Hague Residentie Orchestra in the Netherlands and first principal guest conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. The NJSO has announced that a search is underway for Järvi’s successor as music director.
