The American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced sixteen winners of its awards in music, which total $170,000. The winners, who include younger composition students as well as mid-career and more established composers, are Matthew Barnson, Victoria Bond, Yu-Hui Chang, Ryan Gallagher, Michael Gilbertson, David Gompper, David M. Gordon, David Lang, Ray Lustig, Andrew Norman, Carolyn O’Brien, Laura Elise Schwendinger, Sean Shepherd, Kurt Stallmann, Andrew Waggoner, and Barbara White. The winners were chosen by Academy members Robert Beaser, Martin Bresnick, John Corigliano, Mario Davidovsky, and Shulamit Ran. Candidates for music awards are nominated by the 250 members of the academy.
