A new radio series entitled “Sphinx Journeys” is now airing on Detroit’s WRCJ radio station on Sundays at 5 p.m. The seven one-hour shows focus on music by black and Latino composers and are co-produced by WRCJ and the Sphinx Organization, the Detroit-based nonprofit that works to increase diversity in the classical-music field. The first show, “A Journey of the Harlem Quartet,” aired March 1 and featured “Take the A Train,” Wynton Marsalis’s At the Octoroon Balls, and Guido Lopez Gavilan’s Mi Menor Conga. The March 1 performing quartet comprised violinists Ilmar Gavilan and Melissa White, violist Juan-Miguel Hernandez, and cellist Desmond Neysmith, all of whom have previously been awarded first-place prizes from the Sphinx Competition. Future episodes will focus on music of William Grant Still, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Astor Piazzolla, and others. Programs may also be heard online at time of broadcast at wrcjfm.org and will eventually be available on demand at the same site.
