In Wednesday’s (3/4) Ottawa Citizen (Ontario), Steven Mazey reports, “The National Arts Centre Orchestra’s 40th anniversary season will include its first performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, a joint performance of Mahler’s massive Symphony of a Thousand with Montreal’s Orchestre Metropolitain and visits by the Toronto and Montreal Symphonies, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Mariinsky Orchestra. The orchestra announced details of the 2009-2010 season Tuesday. The NACO will officially mark its 40th birthday with concerts Oct. 8 and 9, with orchestra director Pinchas Zukerman conducting Mahler’s first symphony and Canadian composer Linda Bouchard’s Songs for an Acrobat. … The Bouchard cycle will be one of three Canadian pieces Zukerman will conduct. … Another first will be the orchestra’s joint performance in June of 2010 of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony (Symphony of a Thousand) with Montreal’s Orchestre Metropolitain and its director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The performance will include 140 musicians, eight vocal soloists and 240 choristers from Ottawa and Montreal.” The National Arts Centre’s revamped Great Performers series will also include visits by the Toronto and Montreal symphony orchestras.
