In Pennsylvania, the Reading Symphony Orchestra announced that it will offer six classical programs during the 2009-10 season, as well as holiday concerts on New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day, a children’s concert, and the Nutcracker ballet with the Berks Ballet Theatre. Repertoire will include Dvorák’s Symphony No. 7, part of a multi-year Dvorák cycle; Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2; Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7; Britten’s Simple Symphony; and Josef Suk’s Serenade for Strings. Soloists with the orchestra include RSO timpanist Steven Weiser and guest timpanist Jonathan Haas, who will perform in Philip Glass’s Conerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra;  violinist Elissa Koljonen, who will perform the Elgar Violin Concerto; RSO principal clarinet Janine Thomas, in the Finzi Clarinet Concerto; and pianist Matthew Bengston, who will perform Poulenc’s Concerto Champetre. The RSO will maintain its current ticket prices and offer half off of each Valentine’s Day concert ticket when purchased with a season subscription.
