In an recent Associated Press report appearing in a variety of publications, Lorinda Toledo writes, “Amid an economic downturn, the Las Vegas city council has approved financing on a $475 million performing arts center in a bid to add some elegance to the city’s notorious glitz. Construction could begin this spring on The Smith Center for the Performing Arts in downtown, after the City Council approved a financing plan on Wednesday. Myron Martin, president of the Las Vegas Performing Arts Center Foundation, said construction will generate about 1,000 jobs over the next two years. When the performing arts center opens it is expected to carry a full-time staff of about 100.” The council approved two bonds—valued at $105 million and $85 million—and the center has already raised $200 million in private commitments. “A 2,050-seat main theater is being designed as the home of the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the Nevada Ballet.”
