The Sphinx Commissioning Consortium has selected Daniel Roumain to compose a work to be performed by nine orchestras during the 2010-11 season. The orchestras are the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Richmond Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Roumain’s previous works include orchestral and chamber pieces, film music, and music for theater, modern dance, and electronica. The Sphinx Commissioning Consortium is administered by the Sphinx Organization, the national nonprofit arts and youth development organization dedicated to building diversity in classical music. Roumain’s is the second work to be commissioned by Sphinx; the first was Sinfonia No. 4 by Roberto Sierra, which will be performed by a consortium of American orchestras during the 2009-10 season.
