In Friday’s (4/3) Mining Journal (Marquette, Michigan), Christopher Diem writes, “For the first time, the Marquette Symphony has commissioned an artist to write an original piece of music to be performed. The composer is 26-year-old Ashley Rose Fure, a Marquette native currently studying in Paris who will soon return to Harvard University where she is working on a Ph.D. … Carrie Biolo, administrator of the symphony, said Fure’s piece, ‘Cyan,’ has many ‘sounds and textures.’ She described it as a soundscape and very avant garde. … Fure, the daughter of Russ and Deb Fure, was born in Escanaba and moved to Marquette when she was 5. She attended Interlochen Arts Academy—a private boarding school for the arts—her junior and senior years of high school with financial help from Marquette resident Phyllis Reynolds. Reynolds also provided funding for the symphony’s commission, Biolo said. The symphony got a $7,500 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to match Reynolds’s donation. Biolo said NEA grants are highly competitive and this is the first one ever awarded to the Marquette Symphony.” The premiere performance of the new work took place Saturday.
