American Composers Orchestra has announced the five winners of its 18th annual Underwood New Music Readings: Ivor Francis, Jesse Jones, Eric Nathan, Wang Jie, and Reiko Yamada. Readings of works by the five composers, on May 7 and 8 at New York City’s Miller Theatre, are designed to give emerging composers the opportunity to hear their work performed by a professional orchestra. The readings are free and open to the public. Under the direction of ACO Artistic Director Robert Beaser, Delta David Gier and José Serebrier will conduct Ivor Francis’s Out of Line, Jesse Jones’s Toccata for Orchestra, Eric Nathan’s Icarus Dreamt, Wang Jie’s Symphony No. 1, and Reiko Yamada’s When a Cardinal Fell from the Sky. Mentor composers for the readings will be Derek Bermel, ACO’s Music Alive Composer in Residence; Margaret Brouwer; and John Corigliano. Following the readings, one of the five composers will receive a $15,000 commission to write a new work to be performed by ACO. More information is available at the American Composers Orchestra website.
