In Tuesday’s (4/14) St. Petersburg Times (Florida), John Fleming writes, “Six student composers will have a rare opportunity today when the Florida Orchestra and music director Stefan Sanderling play their works at the University of South Florida in Tampa. ‘It’s unusual for a professional orchestra to work like this with student composers,’ said David Rogers, the orchestra’s artistic administrator and a composer himself. To have a conductor of Sanderling’s stature involved is a bonus. ‘It will be a real learning experience for them to see how a music director will approach their pieces.’ The composers, all students or recent graduates of the USF school of music, and their pieces are Bob Redei (Five Bagatelles for Orchestra), Rhodell Fields (Symphony No. 1, Qualia), Andrew Donald Hoy (The Layered Spectrum), Rachel MacAgy (Sinfonia), Igor Santos (Eta Carinae) and Daniel Frantz (Meditation for Orchestra).” Michael Timpson, assistant professor of composition at USF, notes the diversity in musical styles among the six composers. “The orchestra will have a closed rehearsal this afternoon. The evening session, free and open to the public, will be a workshop performance.”
