“Chocolate lovers of the world, the National Arts Centre Orchestra is about to perform music with your name on it,” writes Steven Mazey in Wednesday’s (4/29) Ottawa Citizen. “Thursday, the orchestra will open a free concert of music by British Columbia composers with Violet Crumble, a 2001 piece Vancouver-based composer Jeffrey Ryan named after ‘the definitive Australian sugar-filled chocolate bar.’ Ryan, former composer in residence for the Vancouver Symphony, dedicates the piece ‘to all those who believe sugar, chocolate and caffeine constitute a food group.’ … Presented as part of the NAC’s BC Scene festival, the free concert will include music by composers who were born or are based in B.C. The concert includes the premieres of pieces for two violins and orchestra commissioned by the NAC from Jocelyn Morlock and Douglas Gwynn Smith and pieces by Rodney Sharman, Douglas Schmidt and the late Jean Coulthard, one of Canada’s best-known composers.”
