Conductor Lorin Maazel and his wife, Dietlinde Turban-Maazel, have announced details of the 2009 Castleton Festival, which will take place from July 3 to 19 at the Maazels’ 550-acre property in Virginia. The focus of the festival will be three operas by Benjamin Britten—Albert Herring, The Turn of the Screw, and The Rape of Lucretia—as well as Britten’s adaptation of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, all staged under Maazel’s artistic direction. The first Saturday performance of The Turn of the Screw will be followed by a country dance. Also scheduled are concerts of symphonies by Mozart and Beethoven; the Bruch Violin Concerto with Glenn Dicterow, principal violin of the New York Philharmonic, as soloist; Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn; and Barber’s Adagio for Strings. The festival will also host 170 young professional musicians for four weeks as they participate in rehearsals, performances, private lessons, and master classes. On July 14, the festival will feature an open house with performances by festival artists, fine-arts exhibits, and tours of the property. The festival immediately follows Maazel’s seventh and final season as music director of the New York Philharmonic.
