In Sunday’s (5/10) Sacramento Bee, Edward Ortiz writes, “If the success of a youth orchestra is determined by how many of the students go on to musical careers—and how many eagerly return to solo with it—then the Sacramento Youth Symphony is right on track. On Saturday afternoon at Hiram Johnson High School, eight alumni of the Sacramento Youth Symphony will return to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Neumann as conductor. … The eight returning alumni range from a bassoonist to an arranger of film and TV music. All are successful musicians in their own right and will appear in a program that ranges from the music of Richard Strauss to an arrangement of Radiohead’s ‘Paranoid Android.’ ” Ortiz speaks with the eight youth symphony alums—composer Brett Abigana; violinist Rebecca Corruccini; conductor Adam Flatt; violinist, arranger, and producer Eric Gorfain; French hornist Cara Jones; bassoonist Tariq Masri; clarinetist Jerry Simas; and violinist Jason Uyeyama—about the their experiences in the youth orchestra and how it affected their lives.
