In Tuesday’s (5/12) New York Times, Dave Itzkoff writes, “The New York Philharmonic said that Esa-Pekka Salonen, the outgoing music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, had withdrawn from a series of concerts scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday with the New York orchestra because of back trouble. In a news release, the New York Philharmonic said that Mr. Salonen would be replaced by David Zinman, the music director of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich. He will conduct the Rush Hour Concert on Wednesday night, which will now feature Mussorgsky’s ‘Night on Bald Mountain’ and Shostakovich‘s Violin Concerto No. 1, with Christian Tetzlaff as soloist. In concerts on Thursday and Saturday, Mr. Zinman will conduct those works as well as Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5; Friday’s concert will focus on the Sibelius work. Gustavo Dudamel is to take over from Mr. Salonen at the Los Angeles Philharmonic in September.”
