A CBC News report posted Tuesday (6/9) states, “Officials at the National Arts Centre said Tuesday they plan to cut up to 40 jobs over the next two years to help prevent the shortfall of several million dollars they expect to have next year. As a result of the recession, the centre had expected a shortfall of $3.8 million next year—without the cuts. Half of the NAC’s budget comes from the government, but the rest is generated through ticket sales, fundraising, pay parking, and revenues from the centre’s Le Café restaurant and catering, according to the NAC’s annual report. Jayne Watson, who speaks for the NAC, said the box office has ‘softened’ this year, and many companies have cut back on their donations. … The NAC will begin by eliminating vacant positions and offering voluntary departure packages and will also cut back on travel and training. The cuts shouldn’t affect the shows that are already booked for the coming season, Watson said.”
