The Sixth Honens International Piano Competition has announced that 21 pianists will compete in Calgary from October 22 to November 6. The quarterfinalists were chosen by a jury that included Angela Cheng, Katherine Chi, Matthias Kirschnereit, and Ronan O’Hora, who reviewed videotaped performances from the competition’s early stages in Calgary, New York City, and Munich this spring. Pianists compete for a total of more than $100,000 (Canadian), plus career-development programs of more than $500,000 (Canadian). Each quarterfinal performer will give two recitals, one of which will include a new work by Brian Current, and another that will feature repertoire for violin and piano, with the participation of violinist Tereza Stanislav. Twelve semifinalists will perform recitals that include artsong/lieder with contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, and five finalists will perform with conductor Christoph Campestrini and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Prizes will be announced on November 6.
