In Friday’s (7/3) Burlington Free Press, Sally Pollak writes, “When Troy Peters conducts the Vermont Youth Orchestra tonight at the Flynn Center, his final performance in Vermont, he will lead the orchestra in a piece he wrote, ‘Champlain’s Voyage.’ The piece that will premiere tonight is Peters’ first major composition for the orchestra he has led for 14 years. When he wrote it, Peters, 40, did not know he would be leaving the VYO after 14 years as its musical director. In August, he will begin a new job as music director for the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio. The composition commemorates the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s arrival in the Champlain Valley. The orchestra’s upcoming tour, to Quebec and France, is tied to that event as well. … The one-movement work is ‘pretty brassy’ at its beginning and ending, Peters said. Its middle section, led by the French horn, is variations on a tune composed by Peters. … ‘It’s not only goodbye to the orchestra as they start their travels,’ Peters said, ‘but a larger farewell to me as I end my tenure here.’ ”
