The New Haven Symphony Orchestra has announced details of its 2009-10 season , which opens on September 17 with Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (“Unfinished”), Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, and Walton’s Violin Concerto with soloist Kurt Nikkanen, led by Music Director William Boughton. The season ends on May 13, 2010 with Beethoven’s Symphony Nos. 8 and 9, the final works in the orchestra’s complete Beethoven symphony cycle. Other works scheduled for 2009-10 include compositions by NHSO’s two composers in residence: Augusta Read Thomas’s Prayer and Celebration featuring cellist Mihai Marica, and Jin Hi Kim’s Monk Dances. Soloists with the orchestra include pianist Irena Koblar, who will perform Brahms’s Second Piano Concerto, and Ani Kavafian, who will play Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3. During the season the orchestra will also perform three pops concerts, led by Associate Conductor Gerald Steichen.
