The Alabama Symphony Orchestra will perform the world premiere of Paul Lansky’s With the Grain, a guitar concerto, on November 6 at the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Music Director Justin Brown will conduct and guitarist David Starobin will serve as soloist in the four-movement work, which was commissioned by the Fromm Music Foundation of Harvard University. Lansky, a professor of music at Princeton University, is the orchestra’s composer-in-residence for the 2009-10 season; the concerto is the first of three new pieces by Lansky to be premiered during the season. In the past decade Lansky has written several works for Starobin, including Semi-Suite, a work for solo guitar. Starobin last performed with the ASO during the 2007-08 season, when he joined the orchestra for Manuel Ponce’s Concierto del Sur and the U.S. premiere of Poul Ruders’s Paganini Variations.
