The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and San Diego Symphony have each announced recordings to be released on August 25. The Baltimore Symphony’s two-CD recording of Bernstein’s Mass: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers will come out on the Naxos label, with a pre-release on iTunes on August 11. The studio recording was made at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in October 2008, just after the orchestra’s performances of the work there; featured performers include baritone Jubilant Sykes, the Morgan State University Chorus, and the Peabody Children’s Chorus. The San Diego Symphony is featured on an upcoming Telarc recording of works by Bright Sheng that includes his Never Far Away for harp and orchestra, with soloist Yolanda Kondonassis. The San Diego Symphony premiered the work in 2008, which was a co-commission by the San Diego Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, and Oberlin Conservatory. The recording also includes Sheng’s Shanghai Overture, the short ballet The Nightingale and the Rose, and Tibetan Love Song and Swing.
