Composer Augusta Read Thomas is curator of this year’s Festival of Contemporary Music at Tanglewood, which is set to take place from August 7 to 11 in Lenox, Massachusetts. The five-day festival will feature seven concerts of music by 38 composers, including four world premieres: Jacob Bancks’s Rapid Transit for oboe, trumpet, trombone, bassoon, and percussion; Elliott Carter’s Zukofsky Songs for clarinet and piano; Helen Grime’s Clarinet Concerto; and Cynthia Wong’s String Quartet No. 1. Other featured composers will include Christopher Rouse, Matthias Pintscher, Pierre Boulez, Beat Furrer, Oliver Knussen, David Rakowski, Tania León, and Aaron Travers. The Boston Symphony Orchestra, led by Assistant Conductor Julian Kuerti, will perform George Perle’s Sinfonietta No. 2 in memory of the composer, who died in January 2009. Read Thomas, a former Tanglewood Music Center Fellow, will moderate an August 9 panel discussion with composers Jacob Bancks, Judd Greenstein, Paula Matthusen, Aaron Travers, and Cynthia Wong. Former Boston Globe critic Richard Dyer will participate in an August 10 talk with Read Thomas about how she went about selecting and putting together this summer’s programs.
