Meet The Composer announced record award amounts for this year for its Commissioning Music/USA program and Cary New Music Performance Fund. The new-music commissioning organization says that it has awarded $300,000 to 31 composers and $150,000 to performers and presenters who have shown a commitment to programming high-quality music by living composers. The amounts are double the amount given in previous years, a move that President Ed Harsh said was designed “be aggressive in multiplying the effect of Meet The Composer’s continuing programs” in a difficult economic climate. Awardees of the national Commissioning Music/USA program receive compensation of full or partial commissioning fees and professional guidance regarding contracts and other business issues; recipients include composer Margaret Brouwer and the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra; composer Yotam Haber and The Knights; composers Edward “Ted” Hearne and James Primosch and the Albany Symphony Orchestra; composer Pierre Jalbert and Copland House; composer David Lang and the International Contemporary Ensemble; composer Steve Reich and Signal; Jerod Tate and the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra; and composer Evan Ziporyn and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Awardees for the Cary New Music Performance Fund, for New York City-based performers and presenters, receive general operating support; recipients include Alarm Will Sound, Flexible Music, MATA, New York New Music Ensemble, and So Percussion.
