California’s Berkeley Symphony and incoming Music Director Joana Carneiro have named composer Gabriela Lena Frank to the new position of creative advisor. Frank will help shape the orchestra’s programming, guide community-engagement projects, and mentor the orchestra’s emerging composers-in-residence. At its opening-night concert at UC Berkeley Zellerbach Hall on October 15, the orchestra will perform the West Coast premiere of Frank’s Peregrinos (Pilgrims), inspired by stories of Latino immigrants. Frank, a Berkeley native and resident, holds degrees from Rice University and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; she was named a Guggenheim Fellow for 2009.
