The Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra has appointed Dr. JAMES TAPIA as conductor, effective with the 2009-10 season. A frequent guest conductor and lecturer throughout the country, Tapia is currently music director of the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra, and is in his ninth year as the university’s director of orchestral studies and chair of the String Department. He had previously spent four years as associate conductor of ensembles at the University of Michigan, during which time he also served as music director and conductor of the Michigan All-State Orchestra. Tapia began his conducting career as assistant conductor of the Tampa Bay Symphony.
