The Philadelphia Orchestra Association announced that it has exceeded the goal of a $250,000 grant from the William Penn Foundation, raising nearly $1.2 million to meet a two-to-one challenge grant launched March 1, 2009. To receive the grant, the orchestra was required to raise $500,000 in new or increased contributions to the annual fund. More than 1,800 donors—including over half of the orchestra’s musicians—enabled the Association to more than double the match. During the challenge grant campaign, 921 new donors contributed nearly $300,000, and 951 donors increased annual gifts resulting nearly $875,000. “In a difficult economy, it’s especially exciting to see the Orchestra meet and exceed the challenge grant goals,” said Feather Houstoun, president of the William Penn Foundation. “One of the Foundation’s most important objectives is to help cultural organizations achieve greater fiscal health, and clearly the Orchestra is making progress in this area.”
