The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra has announced a small surplus for 2008-09, the third consecutive year in which it has operated with a balanced budget. Executive Director Rachel Ford credited the surplus in part to a $35,000 anonymous challenge grant, more than $200,000 in support from the Knoxville Symphony League, and strong ticket sales. The orchestra reports that single-ticket sales increased by 2.4 percent, subscriptions were up 12 percent, and pops concerts for the season boasted an average of 91 percent paid capacity. Interest from younger audience was indicated by increased attendance at the annual Young People’s Concerts and a sold-out Family Concert.
