In Sunday’s (8/30) New York Times, Rachel Lee Harris writes, “In an effort to bring in new audience members, the American Symphony Orchestra is offering $25 tickets for any seat at any performance in its 2009-10 ‘Great Performers’ series at Avery Fisher Hall, it announced. The six-performance series, entering its 17th year, opens Oct. 14 with Vincent d’Indy’s 1893 Romantic French opera, ‘Fervaal,’ and continues Nov. 15 with ‘The Remains of Romanticism,’ devoted to the continued life of Romanticism after 20th-century modernism. The new year brings a tribute to the American composer Henry Cowell, led by the symphony’s music director and principal conductor, Leon Botstein; Soviet music written after Stalin’s death; Robert Schumann’s ‘Scenes From Goethe’s Faust’; and an exploration of reason and sensual pleasure, ‘Apollo and Dionysus.’ ”
