In Tuesday’s (9/1) Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker writes, “From the moment he took the job as music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin said he would seriously ratchet up outreach efforts by taking the orchestra into schools, churches, community centers and the like. In September, Slatkin and the DSO will begin to make good on the promise, inaugurating a week of six free concerts throughout metro Detroit, culminating in an open house at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. The DSO Community Series, which will run Sept. 14-18, includes public performances at Seligman Performing Arts Center in Beverly Hills, Ford Community and Performing Arts in Dearborn and the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Detroit and the Detroit School of Arts. … While the orchestra won’t travel with its complete complement of nearly 100 musicians, the concerts will feature a full orchestra of 70-80 players. The repertoire will be dominated by American music, including works by Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Leroy Anderson and contemporary composer Cindy McTee, current winner of the DSO’s Lebenbom competition for women composers, who will appear with the orchestra to interact with audiences.”
