Astral Artists, a Philadelphia-based organization dedicated to the career development of emerging classical musicians, has announced the appointment of JULIAN RODESCU as artistic director. Rodescu, who enjoys an international career as an operatic bass and voice teacher, has served on Astral’s board for nearly a decade, including as chair of its national auditions and concert program committees. He began his musical training as a pianist in The Juilliard School’s Preparatory Division. Rodescu subsequently turned his attention to the cello and voice, receiving a master’s degree in cello performance from Juilliard and later returning there as part of Juilliard’s American Opera Center. He was a co-founder of New York City’s Bargemusic series and served as its co-music director for five years. Rodescu also founded Italy’s Florence Voice Seminar and is the co-founder and assistant music director of Philadelphia’s Academy Chamber Players. He currently serves on the vocal faculties of New Jersey’s Westminster Choir College and Pennsylvania’s Swarthmore College.
