In Sunday’s (9/13) New York Times, Steve Smith writes, “When Le Poisson Rouge, a nightclub on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village whose diverse offerings include classical and new-music performances, opened in June 2008, its position within the New York music world was that of a bold, plucky upstart. But its schedule for the coming season demonstrates that it has shed any outsider status it might have had. Danielle de Niese, a young soprano normally encountered at bastions of tradition like the Metropolitan Opera and the Glyndebourne Festival in England, celebrates a new Mozart CD at the club on Oct. 6. Other newcomers include the pianist Jonathan Biss (Nov. 12) and the Arditti Quartet (Dec. 1). But what really gives a sense of the status Le Poisson Rouge has attained is two series heralding new relationships with venerable New York institutions. In one, Ensemble ACJW—the lively, flexible chamber group of the Academy, a joint venture of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School and the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie—opens a four-concert residency on Dec. 13. And Axiom, an exciting young Juilliard new-music group directed by Jeffrey Milarsky, will offer three concerts at Le Poisson Rouge beginning on Oct. 7, each complementing an earlier event held in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater or at Alice Tully Hall.”
