This fall the Cleveland Institute of Music will honor composer Ernest Bloch, CIM’s first director, with a symposium and four concerts of his music throughout the Cleveland area. The events commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Bloch, who came to CIM in 1920. The series will begin September 20 with a symposium moderated by CIM President Joel Smirnoff; panelists will include Rabbi Roger C. Klein of Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood, Ohio; Mary Klein, Chair of Case Western Reserve University’s Department of Music; and Ernest Bloch II, Bloch’s grandson. Following the symposium will be performances of three works by Bloch and Schubert’s Piano Trio in B-flat Major, with The Cleveland Orchestra Trio and pianist Halida Dinova. On November 1 and 4, there will be concerts at CIM’s Mixon Hall, featuring music of Bloch, Beethoven, Stravinsky, and Copland; on November 8 the series will conclude with a concert at Temple-Tifereth Israel, featuring a CIM student string quartet and others, including flutist Marisela Sager; violinists Joel Smirnoff, Joan Kwuon, and Stephen Warner; cellists Mark Yee and Charles Bernard; and pianist Carolyn Warner.
