Among the organizations recently announcing opportunities and deadlines for composers and musicians are the First Nations Composer Initiative (FNCI), Stamford Symphony Orchestra, and New York City Opera’s VOX festival. The postmark deadline for FNCI’s sixth round of the Common Ground Grant Program is October 1, for individual awards in a variety of categories ranging from $500 to $7,500; FNCI is a program of the American Composers Forum, and is committed to supporting new music of Native American composers and performers. The Stamford Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut is seeking applicants for its 2009 instrumental competition for high school seniors and commendation awards for eighth graders. The deadline is December 1 for applications to the high-school competition and nominations for the eighth-grade commendation. The competition is open to seniors from Connecticut; the first-place winner will receive $10,000, and the second place award will be $7,000. Music teachers of eighth-grade musicians through Fairfield County may nominate students for the Stamford Symphony’s 2009 Roger Nierenberg Young Musician Commendation Awards. Music Director Eckart Preu will give winners a cash prize and concert tickets at the Stamford Symphony’s January 17, 2010 concert. New York City’s VOX 2010 annual festival of new operas has extended the deadline for submission of new work to October 1; VOX will select up to twelve new, previously unproduced works from emerging and established composers for orchestral readings that are free and open to the public.
