The Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s reports that its new recording, The Melody of Rhythm, was selling at No. 1 on the Billboard’s Classical Chart as of September 25. The Koch CD, released in late August, is a collaboration with banjo player Béla Fleck, bassist Edgar Meyer, and tabla player Zakir Hussain; it was recorded in January 2009 at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall, under Music Director Leonard Slatkin. The Melody of Rhythm, the central work on the CD, is a three-movement composition for banjo, double bass, tabla, and orchestra composed by Fleck, Hussain, and Meyer; it melds Indian classical music with rhythmic American roots-derived melodies. Also on the CD are six shorter selections composed by the trio, also featuring the solo artists with the DSO: Babar, Out of the Blue, Bubbles, Cadence, In Conclusion, and Then Again.
