EMMA McGRATH has been named associate concertmaster of the Seattle Symphony, and made her performance debut in that role at the orchestra’s concert on Thursday, October 1. She served most recently as assistant concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. From 2005 to 2008 McGrath was a regular substitute musician with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and she has also served as a substitute with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A native of northwest England, McGrath has performed extensively as a soloist in Europe, Asia, the UK, and the United States. In 2002 she was a National String Finalist in the BBC Young Musicians Competition; other awards include the Mozart Prize in the International Yampolsky Violin Competition; the Violin Prize from Tanglewood; and the inaugural Gindroz Travel/Study Prize, which affords winners the opportunity to conduct musical and architectural research in Europe. In addition to her activities as a violinist, McGrath is also a professional singer and composer.
