In Wednesday’s (10/21) Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Mark Kanny writes, “When William Caballero became principal horn of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra 20 years ago, he knew right away he’d made a good move. ‘My second week in the orchestra was the last week of the 1988-89 season,’ he recalls. ‘Lorin Maazel conducted Mahler’s Seventh, and the place was packed for all the shows. It was received almost like a rock concert. I realized then and there the passion of the Pittsburgh Symphony’s fans.’ Now, a few weeks before his 50th birthday, Caballero has a new offering for Pittsburgh music lovers—the local premiere of the Horn Concerto by John Williams. The composer is best known for his film scores but also has written a sizable body of concert music. Caballero, principal guest conductor Leonard Slatkin and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform Williams’ Horn Concerto as part of an all-American program Friday and Saturday at Heinz Hall, Downtown.”
