In Wednesday’s (10/28) Crain’s New York Business, Miriam Kreinin Souccar reports, “United Way of New York City on Tuesday launched a new initiative to help find and train new board members for local nonprofit organizations. The program, called BoardServeNYC, is hoping to train 500 volunteers in nonprofit governance each year and then connect those volunteers with nonprofits seeking new directors. The new trustees won’t be going to places like the Metropolitan Opera, where well-connected professionals vie for spots. They will be matched up with the more than 8,000 smaller nonprofits, particularly those located outside of Manhattan, which have a harder time attracting qualified board members. The nonprofits in need of help are in every sector, such as social services, culture and the environment. Finding committed board members can help not only with fundraising, but also with providing other services nonprofits need, including support and advice on organization and public relations. … BoardServeNYC will work together with NYC Service, the new city program launched by Mayor Bloomberg in April to help boost volunteer service in New York.”
