“Saxophones are the glam rockers of the woodwind family,” writes Khalid Moss in Sunday’s (11/1) Dayton Daily News (Ohio). “They are glossy, loud and flamboyant. Saxophones bellow and bark in pop, jazz and blues but rarely surface in classical music. First cousin to the saxes are clarinets. … They are the woodwind of choice in most symphonic works. The clarinet takes center stage in Lowell Liebermann’s ‘Clarinet Concerto’ which will have its world premiere Nov. 5 at the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra’s Classical Series’ ‘Clarinet Milestone: World Premiere’ at the Schuster Center. … Clarinet virtuoso Jon Manasse will be featured soloist on the Liebermann piece. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music and was the youngest winner of the International Clarinet Society Competition. Liebermann, who will join conductor Neal Gittleman on the Meade Theater stage at the Connections concert on Friday (Nov. 6), is a composer, pianist and conductor. His most popular works are ‘Sonata for Flute and Piano’ and ‘The Gargoyles’ for piano.”
