In Monday’s (11/2) Silver City Sun-News (New Mexico), Amanda L. Husson writes, “It may have started out as just a little tune in their heads, but some area music students, with the help of their teachers, have turned inspiration into their greatest masterpieces—so far. The musical works of several southern New Mexico student composers will be performed by the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra at 7 p.m. on Friday at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Journal Theatre in Albuquerque during the Hey, Mozart! New Mexico 2009 Concert, President Brookes McIntyre said. The winning composers from Silver City include Ella Kirk and Ella Myers, both from Jose Barrios Elementary School. The Las Cruces students, Esperanza Chairez and Isaiah Romo, both 12-year-old 7th-graders at Zia Middle School, and Kristen Paz, also 12 and a 7th-grader at Sierra Middle School, along with 11 other students age 12 and under from around the state, will each perform his or her melody and then the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra will play the piece as arranged for orchestra.”
