In Wednesday’s (11/25) Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker writes, “Detroit Symphony Orchestra music director Leonard Slatkin won’t be back on the podium at Orchestra Hall until next year. Slatkin, sidelined since suffering a heart attack on Nov. 1, had been expected to conduct the DSO in concerts on Dec. 10-13, but after consulting with his doctors has chosen an additional three weeks of precautionary rest and care. Denise A. Pineau, vice president at Columbia Artists Management, said that the 65-year-old Slatkin’s additional care will include settling into a dietary and exercise program. ‘It’s standard stuff,’ she said. ‘He’s in very good shape.’ Slatkin, who lives in Troy, has been seen at local restaurants and a DSO spokesperson said he has been around the office, too. … His next scheduled appearance with the orchestra is Jan. 14-17. Conductor Andrew Litton will replace him for the December concerts. Pineau said it was still possible that Slatkin might return to the podium in December, but outside of Detroit. His Web site lists a performance in Moscow with the Russian National Orchestra on Dec. 22.”
