LAURENCE KAPTAIN has been named dean and Penniman Family Professor of Music at Louisiana State University’s College of Music and Dramatic Arts. He served most recently as dean of the Shenandoah Conservatory at Shenandoah University in Virginia, and had earlier directed the Schwob School of Music in Georgia and worked as vice provost at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Kaptain has enjoyed a significant career as a cimbalom artist, performing with such organizations as the Chicago, Saint Louis, and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. As an educator he has pioneered technologies to enhance learning, teaching, and creativity. Kaptain holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan, as well as degrees from the University of Miami and Ball State University.
