The Houston Symphony Society has appointed RICHARD R. HOFFERT interim executive director and CEO, effective January 4, 2010; he will remain in that post pending the selection of a permanent successor to MATTHEW VANBESIEN, who is departing for Australia to become managing director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Hoffert was president and CEO of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1999 until his retirement in 2005. He had earlier served as president of the North Carolina Symphony. Previous positions include vice of president of development at the Saint Louis Symphony and, before that, director of development and marketing at the Indianapolis Symphony. A graduate of Indiana University School of Music, Hoffert began his career as an instrumental high school music teacher.
