Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Designate Riccardo Muti and President Deborah F. Rutter have announced the appointment of cellist YO-YO MA to a three-year term as Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant, beginning in January 2010. The position has been funded by Judson Green, retired president and CEO of NAVTEQ, and Joyce Green, a trustee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association and a board member of its Institute for Learning, Access and Training. In this new position Ma will provide collaborative music leadership and guidance to the Institute and participate in development and implementation of several new initiatives, including a concert series for children ages three to five; workshops for high school and college students called Creating a Life With Music; and programming for incarcerated and at-risk youth, to be developed in partnership with Muti. Ma will also lead chamber music residencies and develop chamber music programming for the CSO’s Symphony Center Presents series, and will develop existing Institute programs serving kindergarten through pre-professional students and music educators.
