The Discovery Orchestra, based in Warren, New Jersey, has announced the appointment of VIRGINIA JOHNSTON as executive director. She has more than two decades of experience in arts leadership, having worked as chief administrator and then managing director at TDO’s predecessor organization, the Philharmonic Orchestra of New Jersey. Also a clarinetist, composer, and conductor, Johnston has served as music director of the Springfield (N.J.) Emanuel United Methodist Church, and is co-founder of New Jersey’s Triad Arts Ensemble as well as conductor of the Triad Vocal Ensemble. She holds a Master of Music degree from Boston University and a Bachelor of Music degree from Syracuse University, with additional training in choral conducting from New Jersey’s Westminster Choir College.
