The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 (“Symphony of a Thousand”) on January 30 and February 1 as part of the 2010 Cultural Olympiad. The Cultural Olympiad (January 22 to March 21) is presented in conjunction with the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which take place from February 12 to 28, 2010. Music Director Bramwell Tovey will lead more than 400 musicians in the Mahler symphony at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre, among them Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman, baritone Russell Braun, bass-baritone Denis Sedov, the Vancouver Bach Choir, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and Vancouver Children’s Chorus. Performers scheduled to appear in other events at the Cultural Olympiad include the National Dance Company of Korea, violist Yuri Bashmet, the New York dance company STREB Extreme Action, the Moscow State Chamber Choir, and Montreal’s Bell Orchestre, a chamber-music/jazz hybrid.
