American conductor DAVID HANDEL has been named music director of Chile’s La Serena Symphony Orchestra. He will conduct three programs as music director designate during the orchestra’s 2010 season and assume full responsibilities in 2011. Handel is currently music director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Bolivia and artistic director of Bolivia’s Guadalquivir International Festival, posts that he will retain in addition to his new post in La Serena. From 2005 to 2008 he served as music director at the UNCuyo Symphony Orchestra in Mendoza, Argentina. He has guest conducted widely, including recent engagements in Poland, Moscow, Argentina, and Mexico. Early in his career Handel served as apprentice conductor to Kurt Masur at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
