“Gustavo Dudamel will make three appearances at the Hollywood Bowl this summer, marking the first time that he will conduct at the venue since ‘Bienvenido Gustavo’ in October,” David Ng writes in the Los Angeles Times Culture Monster blog on Thursday (1/28). “Dudamel will conduct a concert version of Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ on Aug. 1, with Natasha Petrinksy singing the title role. In addition he will conduct a concert featuring Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and Bernstein’s ‘On the Town’ on Aug. 3 and a concert featuring Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ and other pieces on Aug. 5. ‘Gustavo has a sentimental attachment to the Bowl. It’s where he made his U.S. debut with the orchestra,’ said Deborah Borda, president of the L.A. Philharmonic. ‘He enjoys it there. He likes the crowds and it’s a much more diversified audience.’” Others scheduled to perform are John Williams, who will lead film music and his own compositions; violinists Joshua Bell and Augustin Hadelich; and pianists Leon Fleisher and Emanuel Ax. Also planned are three performances of the musical Rent; scenes from the BBC television series Planet Earth Live shown in high-definition, accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and Bramwell Tovey conducting a concert version of Bernstein’s Candide.
