In Thursday’s (2/4) Times Union (Albany, New York), Joseph Dalton writes, “Leaders of the Albany Symphony Orchestra will announce at a news conference this morning at the Palace Theatre plans for the orchestra’s 80th season, running from September through May 2011. A performance of the Verdi Requiem and a celebration of music director David Alan Miller’s 50th birthday are among the highlights in the eight programs to be performed at the Palace, the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and EMPAC. … Also in today’s announcement is the date of the orchestra’s Carnegie Hall debut, May 10, 2011. The appearance is part of the 12-day festival Spring for Music, also featuring the orchestras of Atlanta, Dallas, Montreal, Oregon, Saint Paul and Toledo. … Among other season highlights, Academy Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winner John Corigliano will serve as composer in residence and have two of his works performed and recorded. Derek Bermel will serve as composer-educator and George Tsontakis will be resident composer and new music adviser. Guest artists include Yefim Bronfman, performing the Prokofiev Second Piano Concerto in the season opener, and percussionist Evelyn Glennie will solo in a Corigliano concerto written for her in 2008.”
