Boston’s New England Conservatory has announced the appointment of DAVID LOEBEL as associate director of orchestras, effective in September 2010. Now concluding an eleven-year tenure as music director of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Loebel has appeared with prominent orchestras across the U.S. as well as in Canada, Europe, Tokyo, and Australia. Before coming to Memphis he served as associate and then associate principal conductor at the Saint Louis Symphony, artistic director of the SLSO’s summer festival “Classics in the Loop,” and associate conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Loebel has worked extensively with young musicians as conductor-in-residence at the New World Symphony, as music director of the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, and in guest appearances with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the National Repertory Orchestra, The Juilliard School, Cleveland Institute of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Indiana University. A recipient of the Seaver/National Endowment for the Arts Conductors Award early in his career, he is a graduate of Northwestern University.
